Artist Statement

My current artwork consists of acrylic paintings on paper, canvas, and wood panel surfaces. I use the word “surface” intentionally as each material I work on responds to the application of paint differently. These qualities allow me to explore  mark- making by gently layering the paint through its viscosity and brush work. Conversely, my work experiments with aggressively  scratching and cutting into these surfaces.

My earlier training in printmaking made me sensitive to the blemishes and imperfections that could be found in the printing plate. I  find myself drawn to the beauty in these so-called flaws. I am continually finding objects, materials, and surfaces which I use as a rich source of inspiration. Through my paintings I engage and play off of these marks to visually guide, contain, and connect them into a cohesive composition. My artworks amplify these marks, allowing me to create a sense of order and balance. The overall result  is a series of paintings which  embody playfulness, energy, and with a feeling of immediacy. I want the viewer to experience a relationship that is complete, even with blemishes and imperfections, requiring nothing more to be added or removed.
